I have always loved miniatures and toy soldiers. Much of my childhood was spent setting up armies of Playmobil, Marx and Britains Deetail figures. I cherished these toys, but as I grew older I desired a more realistic "toy soldier" and more sophisticated "battlefield". I soon began to enhance and paint these figures to play the part. The repainting of the Deetail plastic knights was especially enjoyable. It appears this may have been an early inspiration in what I love to do now. There is just something about a lead toy soldier or knight painted in bright gloss. The smooth enamel, bright color has its own allure. Boxes of lead Britains on Christmas day was before my time, but I can only imagine the excitement.
My vast toy soldier collection is filled with Trophy, Imperial, William Hocker, Fusilier, Tradition, Marlborough....not to mention my knight collection. I have the utmost respect for the work of Peter Greenhill, Bob Hornung, Jacques Cuypers, Brian Rodden. Their styles, along with the the masters: Courtenay, Ping, and Selwyn Smith, have greatly influenced my own painting style.
